Sawtooth Block
DIFFICULTY LEVEL ‣ BEGINNER
FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 12″ x 12″
It’s easy to see where the Sawtooth block gets its name: The jagged triangles resemble the teeth of a saw. The block dates all the way back to the 1800s. This can make a striking two-color quilt, or use the large center square to show off a favorite print.
Instructions:
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with diagrams. Basic quiltmaking supplies are assumed. Fabric requirements include extra yardage for shrinkage and insurance. If working with directional prints, you may want to begin with more fabric than called for.
WOF = width of fabric
HST = half-square triangle
FABRIC:
Fabric A: (1) 7″ x WOF strip white fabric
Fabric B: (1) 4½” x 25″ strip medium fabric
CUTTING:
From Fabric A, cut:
• (1) 6½” x 6½” square
• (4) 4” x 4” squares
• (2) 3½” x 3½” squares
From Fabric B, cut:
• (4) 4″ x 4″ squares
• (2) 3½” x 3½” squares
Block Assembly:
Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (1) Fabric A 4″ square. Place over (1) Fabric B 4″ square. Sew a ¼” seam allowance on each side of drawn line. Cut in half on drawn line and press to make (2) HST Units. Trim to 3½” each. Make 8.
Paying attention to orientation, lay out (8) HST Units, (2) Fabric A 3½” squares, (2) Fabric B 3½” squares, and (1) Fabric A 6½” square as shown in Diagram 2. Sew into rows. Sew rows together to make Sawtooth Block.
