Necktie Block

Necktie Block

DIFFICULTY LEVEL ‣ BEGINNER

FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 6″ x 6″

The Necktie block, also known as Bowtie, has been around since the mid-1800s. It was eventually published by the Ladies Art Company in 1895. Although the block might look complicated, it actually comes together easily with one flip-and-sew corner added to plain squares. See our Ties to Indiana quilt pattern in Classic Quilts for instructions on how to make these blocks into a quilt.

Instructions:

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with illustrations. Fabric requirements include extra yardage for shrinkage and insurance. If working with directional prints, you may want to begin with more fabric than called for.

FABRIC:

Fabric A: (1) 4″ x 10″ piece blue fabric

Fabric B: (1) 4″ x 8″ piece white fabric

CUTTING:

From Fabric A, cut:

• (2) 3½” x 3½” squares

• (2) 1½” x 1½” squares

From Fabric B, cut:

• (2) 3½” x 3½” squares

Block Assembly:

Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (2) Fabric A 1½” squares. Place (1) Fabric A square over one corner of (1) Fabric B 3½” square. Sew on diagonal line. Cut ¼” from drawn line and press open to make Corner Unit. Make 2.
