Crazy Ann Block

FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 10″ X 10″
The Crazy Ann block burst onto the quilting scene in 1929, its sharp points on trend with the Art Deco movement of the era. It resembles an electric fan or a child’s pinwheel toy. Have fun making the block in the colors indicated, or go scrappy with fabrics from your collection.
Instructions:
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with illustrations. Basic quiltmaking supplies are assumed. Fabric requirements include extra yardage for shrinkage and insurance.
Print template patterns at 100%, making sure your printer is set to No Scaling. Trace template patterns onto quilter’s template plastic and transfer all marks. Place template right side down on wrong side of fabric. Trace around template with fabric pen or pencil. Cut out on marked lines.
HST = half-square triangle
FABRIC:
Fabric A: (1) 4″ x 14″ piece blue fabric
Fabric B: (1) 6″ x 23″ piece white fabric
Fabric C: (1) 6″ x 22″ piece yellow fabric
ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES:
- Quilter’s template plastic
- Awl or large needle
- Water-soluble pen/pencil
CUTTING:
From Fabric A, cut:
• (5) 2½” x 2½” squares
From Fabric B, cut:
• (4) 2⅞” x 2⅞” squares. Cut squares in half diagonally to make 8 HSTs.
• (4) patches from template
From Fabric C, cut:
• (2) 4⅞” x 4⅞” squares. Cut squares in half diagonally to make 8 HSTs.
• (4) patches from template
Block Assembly:
Lay out Fabric A 2½” square, (2) Fabric B 2⅞” HSTs, and (1) Fabric C 4⅞” HST as shown in Diagram 1. Sew Fabric B triangles to adjacent sides of square and then sew Fabric C triangle to long side to make Corner Unit. Make 4.

Referring to Diagram 2, sew together Fabric B and Fabric C patches cut from template. to make Side Unit. Make 4.

Paying attention to orientation, lay out (4) Corner Units, (4) Side Units, and Fabric A 2½” square as shown in Diagram 3. Sew into rows. Sew rows together to make Crazy Ann Block.
