Aunt Dinah Block

DIFFICULTY LEVEL ‣ INTERMEDIATE

FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 12″ X 12″

This quilt block dates to 1946. Dinah is a Biblical name; in the book of Genesis, Dinah was the seventh child (and only daughter) of Leah and Jacob whose story is told in chapter 34. The base of this block is the Ohio Star, but the corners have additional squares and half-square triangles. 

Instructions:

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with illustrations. Basic quiltmaking supplies are assumed. Fabric requirements include extra yardage for shrinkage and insurance. 

HST = half-square triangle 

 

FABRIC:

Fabric A: (1) 7″ x 23″ strip white fabric 

Fabric B: (1) 7″ x 22″ strip purple fabric 

Fabric C: (1) 7″ x 7″ square pink fabric 


CUTTING:

From Fabric A, cut: 

• (2) 5¾” x 5¾” squares 

• (1) 4½” x 4½” square 

• (4) 2½” x 2½” squares. Cut squares in half diagonally to make 8 HSTs. 

From Fabric B, cut: 

• (1) 5¾” x 5¾” square 

• (2) 4½” x 4½” squares. Cut squares in half diagonally to make 4 HSTs. 

• (4) 2½” x 2½” squares 

From Fabric C, cut: 

• 5¾” x 5¾” square 

Block Assembly:

Sew (2) Fabric A HSTs to (1) Fabric B 2½” square as shown in Diagram 1. Join Fabric B HST to long edge to make Corner Unit. Make 4.

Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (1) Fabric A 5¾” square. Place marked square over (1) Fabric B 5½” square. Sew a ¼” seam allowance on each side of drawn line. Cut in half on drawn line and press to make (2) HST Unit As. Trim to 5¼” each.

Repeat with (1) Fabric A 5¾” square and (1) Fabric C 5¾” square to make (2) HST Unit Bs as shown in Diagram 3. Trim to 5¼” each.

Referring to Diagram 4, draw a diagonal line perpendicular to seam on wrong side of (1) HST Unit A. This will be your cutting line. Mark sewing lines ¼” away from each side of cutting line. Place HST Unit A on top of HST Unit B, right sides facing and matching fabrics opposite each other. Sew along marked sewing lines. Then cut along marked cutting line to make (2) 3-Color Hourglass Units. Make 4.

Paying attention to orientation, lay out Corner Units, 3-Color Hourglass Units, and Fabric A 4½” square as shown in Diagram 5. Sew into rows. Sew rows together to make Aunt Dinah Block.
