A Letter from the Editor, September 2023
Dear, Quilting Friend:
The days are getting shorter, and the temperatures are beginning to drop in Alabama, and I’m beginning to think of the things I most enjoy about this time of year. It is a peaceful transition between seasons as I begin scouting out local shops and quilt shows nearby. Over the years, my husband and I have lived in various parts of the country, and I’m excited to say that it brings me joy when I find a new shop to visit or a quilt show to attend or a guild I’d like to find out more about or a local group I’d like to join to make quilts for charity. When I think of the art of quilting, I feel it is most enjoyable when sharing it with a community of fellow quilters, and this is what we wish to convey through Quilt Street.
We are currently hosting a special subscription rate for quilt guilds, which makes it convenient and fun to quilt along with fellow guild members (use coupon code GUILDNS for 30% off through 9/30/23). This month, our newest patterns are all wonderful examples of quilts you can create quilting with your guild friends. For example, consider First Frost, Hidden Stars, and Fright Night—these patterns are perfect for a group block swap to make your finished quilt.
My friend, Gerri Robinson of Planted Seed Designs, designed Hidden Stars using her newest fabric collection called Heartfelt for Riley Blake Designs. It’s a beautiful quilt that looks more complicated than it actually is. Fractured Hour Glass is a quilt I designed using a Moda Layer Cake. It’s a breeze to make and offers a lot of visual impact with on-point squares to show off custom quilting. If you like to challenge yourself, check out Suspension Bridge. Both of these quilts were selected this month as our Pattern Insights quilts. We share extra tips and tricks to help you achieve best results when making them, so be sure to check out the accompanying videos. From our classic quilts collection, Burgoyne Surrounded offers a visual treat in this two-color design and is a sweet, stylish quilt to make just in time for the upcoming holidays. Use red and white fabrics for Christmas or blue and white fabrics for Hanukkah.
We’ll be releasing patterns, videos, and articles throughout the month, so be sure to check in often to see what’s new on Quilt Street. We continue to share our weekly block videos. This month, Mary Kate shares the construction and helpful tips for four new blocks. I’m thrilled to say that these videos have become fan favorites. We also wrap up our “Teach Me How to Quilt” videos and our Celebration Mystery Quilt-Along series. However, if you’re new to Quilt Street, these series are free, and you can start them at any time!
Our next quilt-along from teacher and host Krista Moser is about to begin. Join Krista as she walks you through making her Vintage Windmill pattern. It’s a beautiful quilt she makes that looks difficult, but Krista shows you step-by-step how easy it is to make. See the lovely fabric collection she uses in reds, creams, and blues called Victory Garden by Timeless Treasures. Visit Krista’s website for more information on purchasing a kit for this series to make the same version she makes—so pretty and great for gift-giving or keeping as a special throw for yourself!
Have a wonderful September, and please be sure to write to us and upload photos of what you’re making from our vast array of quilt and block patterns on our website’s Community Photos page!
Happy quilting!
Susan Guzman
