Welcome to Honeysuckle Cottage! It’s a sweet little cottage where window boxes overflow with flowers, and a well-manicured lawn with low-growing boxwood hedges outline a lovely rose garden and a slate pathway leading to the front door. You’re just in time for afternoon tea when you step inside onto a tile floor that’s colorful and unusually charming and you say to yourself, “My, that floor pattern would make a beautiful quilt!” 

Instructions:

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with diagrams. Basic quiltmaking supplies are assumed. Fabric requirements include extra yardage for shrinkage and insurance. If working with directional prints, you may want to purchase more fabric than called for. 

WOF = width of fabric

Fabric A: cream plaid (Lookout PWSK052.DAWN) = 3¾ yards 

Fabric B: navy print (Waverly PWSK048.DUSK) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric C: burgundy floral (PWSK038 Dawn Abby) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric D: chartreuse stripe (PWSK045 Dawn Orchard) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric E: aqua floral stripe (PWSK043 Dawn Lakeview) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric F: yellow stripe (PWSK039 Dawn Buttercup) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric G: eggplant floral stripe (PWSK044 Dusk Heather) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric H: red print (PWSK047 Dawn Poppy) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric I: purple print (PWSK040 Dusk Cameo) = ⅝ yard 

Fabric J: green plaid (PWSK042 Dusk Gable) = ⅝ yard

CUTTING:

From Fabric A, cut: 

• (28) 4½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (224) 4½” x 4½” squares 

From Fabric B, cut: 

• (9) 1½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (224) 1½” x 1½” squares 

• (3) 1¼” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (72) 1¼” x 1¼” squares 

From Fabric C, cut: 

• (2) 8½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (6) 8½” x 8½” squares 

From Fabric D, cut: 

• (2) 8½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (6) 8½” x 8½” squares 

From Fabric E, cut: 

• (2) 8½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (6) 8½” x 8½” squares 

From Fabric F, cut: 

• (2) 8½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (6) 8½” x 8½” squares 

From Fabric G, cut: 

• (2) 8½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into:

From Fabric K, cut: 

• (2) 8½” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (5) 8½” x 8½” squares 

From Fabric L, cut: 

• (8) 2½” x WOF strips. Set aside for binding. 

• (32) 1¼” x WOF strips. Cut strips into: 

• (127) 1¼” x 8½” rectangles

Block Assembly

Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (24) Fabric A 4½” squares. Place (2) marked Fabric A squares onto opposite corners of (1) Fabric C 8½” square and sew together on drawn lines. Trim corners ¼” from sewn lines; press. In the same manner, place marked Fabric A squares on remaining 2 corners, sew together on drawn lines, trim corners, and press to make Square-in-a-Square Unit. Make 6. Repeat to make remaining units in fabrics and quantities shown for a total of 56 assorted Square-in-a-Square Units.

2 In a similar manner and referring to Diagram 2, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (224) Fabric B 1½” squares. Place (2) marked Fabric B squares onto opposite corners of a Fabric A/C Square-in-a-Square Unit. Sew together on drawn lines, trim corners ¼” away from sewn lines, and press. Place 2 more marked Fabric B squares on remaining 2 corners, sew together on drawn lines, trim corners, and press to make Honeysuckle Cottage Block. Using remaining 55 assorted Square-in-a-Square Units, make a total of 56 Honeysuckle Cottage Blocks.

Quilt Assembly and Finishing

Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out (72) Fabric B 1¼” squares, (127) Fabric L 1¼” x 8½” sashing strips, and (56) Honeysuckle Cottage Blocks as shown. Sew into rows. Sew rows together to make Honeysuckle Cottage Quilt Top. 

Honeysuckle Cottage Quilt Assembly Diagram

  1. Trim selvage edges from 4 yards of backing fabric, fold yardage in half lengthwise, and cut into (2) 2-yard LOF pieces. Sew pieces together along LOF; press seam to one side. (Seam will be horizontal on quilt backing.) 

  2. Center and layer backing, batting, and quilt top together to make a quilt sandwich; baste layers together and quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with quilt top. 

  3. Using diagonal seams, make Fabric L binding from (8) 2½” x WOF strips. Fold binding in half lengthwise, matching wrong sides; press the length. 

  4. Sew binding to quilt top and miter corners; join binding ends as desired. Press binding away from quilt top and fold over quilt’s edge to back of quilt. Hand-stitch binding in place to finish.
