Odd Scraps Patchwork Block

FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 15″ x 15″

Isn’t this a charming name for a quilt block? The pattern dates to the mid- to late-1800s, and the moniker brings to mind an ancestor of yore going through her scraps of woven fabrics she used to make shirts for her family. The large 15″ blocks make it an ideal quilt for a beginner. Go through your “odd scraps” to make this fun block, and be sure to check out the antique quilt that features full instructions for making a quilt with this block. 

Instructions:

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with diagrams. Basic quiltmaking supplies are assumed. 


WOF = width of fabric 

HST = half-square triangle 

 

FABRIC:

Fabric A: 1 fat quarter (18″ x 20″) light print 

Fabric B: 1 fat quarter (18″ x 20″) blue print 

 

CUTTING:

From Fabric A, cut: 

• (2) 4″ x 20″ strips. Cut strips into: 

• (8) 4″ x 4″ squares 

• (1) 3½” x 20″ strip. Cut strip into: 

• (5) 3½” x 3½” squares 

From Fabric B, cut: 

• (2) 4″ x 20″ strips. Cut strips into: 

• (8) 4″ x 4″ squares 

• (1) 3½” x 20″ strip. Cut strip into: 

• (4) 3½” x 3½” squares

Block Assembly:

Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (8) Fabric A 4″ squares. Place (1) Fabric A 4″ square over (1) Fabric B 4″ square. Sew a ¼” seam allowance on each side of drawn line. Cut in half on drawn line and press to make (2) HST Units. Trim to 3½” each. Make 16. Odd Scraps Patchwork - Diagram 1

Paying attention to orientation, lay out (4) HST Units as shown in Diagram 2. Sew into rows. Sew rows together to make (1) Corner Unit. Make 4. Odd Scraps Patchwork - Diagram 2

Paying attention to orientation, lay out (1) Fabric A and (1) Fabric B 3½” square. Sew together to make (1) Side Unit. Make 4. Odd Scraps Patchwork - Diagram 3

 

Paying attention to orientation, lay out (1) Fabric A 3½” square, (4) Corner Units, and (4) Side Units as shown in Diagram 4. Sew into rows. Sew rows together to make (1) Odd Scraps Patchwork Block. Odd Scraps Patchwork - Diagram 4
