Puss in the Corner Block
DIFFICULTY LEVEL ‣ BEGINNER
FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 8″ x 8″
Puss in the Corner is an uneven Nine Patch block with triangles for the corners. The large center square—ideal for showing off a lovely novelty print, if you wish—is twice the size of the bars that surround it. With some clever fabric placement and fussy cutting, you could even use a cat print in the corner triangles! Or simply use the two-color version we show here.
Instructions:
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with diagrams. Basic quilt making supplies are assumed. Fabric requirements include extra yardage for shrinkage and insurance. If working with directional prints, you may want to begin with more fabric than called for.
FABRIC:
Fabric A: (1) 5″ x 11″ strip orange fabric
Fabric B: (1) 5″ x 17″ strip blue fabric
CUTTING:
From Fabric A, cut:
• (1) 4½” x 4½” square
• (2) 3″ x 3″ squares
From Fabric B, cut:
• (4) 4½” x 2½” rectangles
• (2) 3″ x 3″ squares
Block Assembly:
Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (1) Fabric A 3″ square. Place over Fabric B 3″ square. Sew a ¼” seam allowance on each side of drawn line. Cut in half on drawn line and press to make (2) HST Units. Trim to 2½” each. Make 4.

Paying attention to orientation, lay out HST Units, Fabric A 4½” square, and Fabric B rectangles as shown in Diagram 2. Sew into rows. Sew rows together to make Puss in the Corner Block.
