Rosebud Block
DIFFICULTY LEVEL ‣ INTERMEDIATE
FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 9″ x 9″
The Ladies Art Company first published the Rosebud pattern sometime in the 1920s. In its simplest form, a rosebud describes a young rose whose petals have not yet opened. Such are the fine points of this delicate block. We can imagine the larger portion of the block as a wrapping, enveloping the fine points of a rosebud that peek beyond its edges. In Britain, rosebud was sometimes used as a term of endearment for a pretty young woman. And in America, it was sometimes used to describe a debutante. What a lovely quilt this would make for a young lady or any special woman in your life.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with illustrations. Basic quiltmaking supplies are assumed.
HST = half-square triangle
FABRIC:
Fabric A: (1) fat eighth (9″ x 22″) white fabric
Fabric B: (1) fat eighth (9″ x 22″) red fabric
CUTTING:
From Fabric A, cut:
• (2) 5⅜” x 5⅜” squares. Cut each square in half diagonally to make 4 HST.
• (4) 2½” x 2½” squares
• (2) 2⅜” x 2⅜” squares. Cut each square in half diagonally to make 4 HST.
From Fabric B, cut:
• (2) 3⅞” x 3⅞” squares. Cut each square in half diagonally to make 4 HST.
• (4) 2½” x 2½” squares
Block Assembly:
Referring to Diagram 1, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of (4) Fabric A 2½” squares. Place Fabric A 2½” square over Fabric B 2½” square. Sew a ¼” seam allowance on each side of drawn line. Cut in half on drawn line and press to make (2) HST Units. Trim to 2″ each. Make 8.
Paying attention to orientation, lay out (2) 2″ HST Units, (1) Fabric A 23/8″ HST, (1) Fabric A 5⅜” HST, and (1) Fabric B 3⅞” HST as shown in Diagram 2. Sew (2) 2″ HST Units and (1) Fabric A 2⅜” HST together to make top row. Sew (1) Fabric B 3⅞” HST to bottom of row, aligning at right side. Sew (1) Fabric A 5⅜” HST to diagonal to make (1) Quarter Unit. Make 4.
Paying attention to orientation, lay out (4) Quarter Units as shown in Diagram 3. Sew together into rows. Sew rows together to make Rosebud Block.
