Scotch Quilt Block

The Scotch Quilt block is a relative newcomer on the scene, dating to 1968. Whether you are of Scottish origin or not, you will appreciate how easily this block comes together using simple squares and rectangles.
Instructions:
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with illustrations. Basic quiltmaking supplies are assumed. If working with directional prints or if you want a little room for insurance, you may want to begin with larger pieces than what we call for.
FABRIC:
Fabric A: (1) 3″ x 10″ strip blue fabric
Fabric B: (1) 5″ x 5″ square white fabric
Fabric C: (1) 3″ x 3″ square red fabric
Fabric D: (1) 3″ x 14″ strip green fabric
Fabric E: (1) 3″ x 3″ square purple fabric
CUTTING:
From Fabric A, cut:
• (2) 2½” x 4½” rectangles
From Fabric B, cut:
• (1) 4½” x 4½” square
From Fabric C, cut:
• (1) 2½” x 2½” square
From Fabric D, cut:
• (2) 2½” x 6½” rectangles
From Fabric E, cut:
• (1) 2½” x 2½” square
Block Assembly:
Referring to Diagram 1, sew (1) Fabric A 2½” x 4½” rectangle to right side of Fabric B 4½” square. Sew remaining Fabric A 2½” x 4½” rectangle to Fabric C 2½” square. Sew to top to make Center Unit.

Referring to Diagram 2, sew (1) Fabric D 2½” x 6½” rectangle to right side of Center Unit. Sew together remaining Fabric D rectangle and Fabric E 2½” square as shown. Sew to top of Center Unit to make Scotch Quilt Block.
