Square and Star Block

DIFFICULTY LEVEL ‣ INTERMEDIATE

FINISHED BLOCK SIZE: 16″ x 16″ 

The Square and Star block has so many dynamic elements happening around its outer edges, but its center is a nice palette for a bit of appliqué, some decorative quilting, or even a secondary block design such as a four patch. Use your imagination! 

Instructions:

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Read through entire pattern before beginning project. Use ¼” seam allowances with fabric right sides together. Pressing arrows are included with illustrations. Fabric requirements include extra yardage for shrinkage and insurance. If working with directional prints, you may want to begin with more fabric than called for. 

WOF = width of fabric 

HST = half-square triangle 

QST = quarter-square triangle 

 

FABRIC:

Fabric A: (1) 6″ x WOF strip purple fabric 

Fabric B: (1) 11″ x WOF strip gold fabric 

 

CUTTING:

From Fabric A, cut: 

• (2) 5¼” x 5¼” squares. Cut squares in half diagonally 

twice to make 8 QST. 

• (2) 4⅞” x 4⅞” squares. Cut squares in half 

diagonally once to make 4 HST. 

• (4) 3⅜” x 3⅜” squares 

From Fabric B, cut: 

(1) 6¼” x 6¼” square 

From remainder of strip, cut: 

• (1) 5¼” x WOF strip. Cut strip into: 

• (4) 5¼” x 5¼” squares. Cut squares in half diagonally twice to make 16 QST.

Block Assembly:

Fold in half long side of (1) Fabric A 4⅞” HST and gently finger-press center point. In the same manner, fold in half one side of Fabric B 6¼” square and finger-press center point. Match folded center points, pin, and sew together as shown in Diagram 1. In the same manner, sew (1) Fabric A HST to opposite side. Sew triangles to remaining two sides to make Center Unit.

Lay out (2) Fabric A QSTs, (4) Fabric B QSTs, and (1) Fabric A 3⅜” square as shown in Diagram 2. Sew into diagonal rows. Sew rows together to make Side Section. Make 4.

Referring to Diagram 3, lay out (4) Fabric B 4½” squares, (4) Side Sections, and Center Unit. Sew into rows. Sew rows together and press to make Square and Star Block.
